Code of Conduct

The Quick Version

Our conference is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices.

We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference venue, be it on Zoom, Twitter, Threads, Mastodon, BlueSky, Discord, or any other online forum. Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference without a refund at the discretion of the conference organisers.

Please feel free to contact any of the co-chairs or to reach out to us on Discord or in the Zoom. You can also reach out to planning@stemlib.co .

The Less Quick Version

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, technology choices, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical or virtual contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

While our conference is taking place on Zoom with a Discord backchannel, not in a physical space, harassment is still possible in online environments, and it’s up to all of us to ensure the best virtual conference experience for everyone. This is a professional space where we have all congregated to learn and grow, and both the organizers and attendees want to make the best environment possible for everyone.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Sponsors are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. In particular, sponsors should not use sexualised images, activities, or other material, in either the Zoom sponsorship slides or in the breakout rooms associated with the conference.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the conference organisers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact one of the organizers immediately. Conference organizers can be identified as co-hosts on Zoom and as members of the “planning group” member type on Discord. We aim to resolve all harassment incidents in the most just way possible.

We expect participants to follow these rules in all conference venues and conference-related social events.

(Note: this Code of Conduct was adapted from here specifically to address the online environment.)
